The Creative Figure
He takes a nude and dresses it again — not in clothes, but in his own artistic language.
In Michael's words
“I respond from one piece to the next, often using a different medium. I keep switching between 2D and 3D, and as I go I heavily edit and simplify.”
Michael particularly enjoys the figure and working from life. It provides a framework for developing thoughts and skills, rather like a musician practising scales and arpeggios. Rather than accurately copying the figure, his approach adds mystery and interest so that it will command attention.
A charcoal drawing may suggest a sculptural element; the three-dimensional piece may then suggest an idea in paint. With each translation the image breaks further away from the representational and into abstraction — which is why so many drawings here sit beside the sculptures they became.
